Tape 1, Side 1: the year that he came to Lubbock and where they came from; Mexican families in Lubbock; his aunt Elizabeth, lived for 110 years and how she helps him focus in the religious life; his change of life; the beginning of the Catholic Church thanks to his father; his father was a partner and a treasurer of the cemetery; life during the Depression; children and women also had to work; society of the cemetery was necessary because of the lack of money during the Depression; the time when the first cemetery got full. the development of the city of Lubbock; entertainment during those years; singers and the dry law in Lubbock; how to do liquor from corn, very popular on those times; the beginning of his alcoholism problem; started to make beer and sell it in other cities; lack of work in places like Lubbock and the abundance of jobs in cities like Dallas; racism in those times and how it has change with the pass of the years; equality of opportunities for Mexicans, as long as they take advantage of education; no opportunities to advance in matters of education; the importance of parents in improving education of children; the importance of his father referring to the sale of land; he left Lubbock in 1960 and that he does not recognizes the name of Pedro Lopez; San Jose church he went to; his wife and how he met her; the changes in Lubbock; the changes referring to Mexican people; his birthplace (Marathon, TX); his beet work in Colorado; how he learned to read Spanish 10 years ago; the importance of knowing how to read and write; the power of the good against the bad. the importance of praying.
