In this first interview with Shelia Patterson Harris, she speaks about her childhood and homelife, her family and the traditions and values her parents instilled in her. She provides information about her great-grandmother moving to Lubbock and living in the Flats, along with her mother being born in the Chatman Hill area. She talks about growing up in that neighborhood and the thriving connected community she witnessed. Patterson Harris outlines her primary and secondary education (including having Mae Simmons as a second grade teacher). She speaks on the integration and desegregation issues she faced while in junior high and high school. She explains interests in school, including choir and speech, touches on her college education at North Texas State, and the interview concludes with remembrances of her father’s work when she was young.
