Abstract

Tape 1: Historian Paul Carlson discusses General William Shafter, his background, and his career in the United State Army during the Civil War and the Indian Wars of the 1870s. General Shafter was involved in the massacre at Wounded knee in 1890, the American Railways Union strike in 1894 and the Llano Estacado Expedition in 1874 and invested in a silver mine at Fort Davis, Texas. He was stationed at Ringgold Barracks, Texas; Fort Clark, Texas; Fort Duncan, Texas; Fort Jefferson, Texas; Fort Concho, Texas; and Fort McKavett, Texas.
