Abstract

The Jewish community in 1932 was made of 12-15 mostly merchant families. They would hold social events at the Lubbock Hotel. In the beginning, services were not done by ordained Rabbis. They used an old house on the 2400 block of Ave. X as a sanctiary for 7-8 years. It would hold 25-30 people. They then moved to Ave. Q and 23rd. It had an office for the Rabbi and a kitchen. They would have social events when salesmen were in town. The salesmen would come on the weekends and they thought of Lubbock as an oasis in the desert. She discusses many of the families and their stores. Levines, Freids, Garrets, Zales, Bergers, Kilmores, etc. Many of the stores were located on Broadway and some on Texas Ave. The synagogue on 23rd street lasted from 1942 to 1985 which is when they built a new one on 82nd street. They had a reputation of keeping Rabbis for only 2 years
