Abstract

Background, Born in Del Rio, Texas in 1914, 87 years old, 3-4 years old lived in New Mexico because his father ranched, Learned how to speak Spanish, Amazed at how a young person could pick up a language so easily, Languages are very similar, Has always been interested in language, Father, Raised sheep, Lived in a grass house, Dirt floor, Thatched roof, Moved to an Adobe two room house, Born in Prairie Lee, Texas, Wife had tuberculosis, Had a son and he also died, Father: John Cobin Graham, Mother: Margaret Fluorine Callan, Family, Grandfather was a speculator of land, Established a paper in Coleman, Texas, Helped survey Maynard County, Didn’t start school until age 6 or 7, One room school, Went to school in Del Rio for one year before moving to Kimbell County, One teacher, All grades in one room, Best school because he could listen to the older kids, Consolidated in the 1930s, Started a bus system, The depression, It affected his father a lot, He had a hard time paying for the ranch, Worked most of his life paying for the ranch, 25 cents an acre, Graduated from junction in 1932, Went to the University of Texas right after high school for one year, Had to work, Coke Stevenson was in office then, Major changes to the town, Interstate in the late 50s, Center of town was by the courthouse, Residential area was spread out, Big flood in the 30s, Biggest they ever had, Was working at a clothing store and someone rushed in asking for help moving furniture from a flooding house, Worked as a soda jerk, Never missed a day of work even though he was fired 3 times, WWII, Was stationed in India for a year and a half, Learned about the culture, Bargaining was a part of their life, Learned how to bargain from his Indian friends, Peddlers, First Impression of Coke Stevenson, Let Graham use his office, Also let him work for him after he got his license, Very good to Graham, Helped Graham stay in school, Had a job as night watch, Law partner was Weaver Baker, Could do open arguments and closing arguments, Took the bar exam in 1935, After receiving license to practice, Didn’t have an office or typewriter, Coke Stevenson let Graham be sort of a junior partner, Better than going to law school, Got married, Have been married 66 years to Maude Boon, Met in high school, Career, Practiced law in Kimble County for 17 years, Private practice
