Abstract

Tape 1, Side 1: Hernandez family background, 1920 Hernandez family moved to Texas, working in different fields in Texas, Great Depression, 1934 living in New Mexico, ranch at Shallowater, school discrimination, 1941 moved to Lubbock, restaurants "no Mexicans allowed", segregation in theaters, Lubbock fields, poor working conditions, children's labor, mother had a vegetable garden, Mexican workers, 1930 salary was 15 cents an hour, got married in 1951, 1941 first time a restaurant admitted Mexicans in Lubbock, first Mexican families in the neighborhood, a folk healer was the "doctor" for Mexicans, Doctor Duran was the only Mexican doctor, Guadalupe Elementary School, discrimination problems, Kay Carter Junior High School, discrimination problems, different jobs that Ramon had, faced different discrimination problems while working, 1970 had a serious back injury
