Abstract

Tape 1, Side 1: Background, father born in Germany, mother's grandfather from Germany, grandmother never spoke of past, Galveston, child's caregiver. Thomas Hickey and his wife, German community gatherings, West Texas, Old Brandenburg, Old Glory, Mr. Hick, WWI, published magazine in Fort Worth, few subscribers, first recollections-- catered to his nieces, dolls and comic books, gave them attention and love, pet names, Uncle's arrest in Abilene, Mrs. Lamb's father bailed his out, people opposed to him, he called police liars, fire happened at night, smelt smoke, utility building, families worked together to save their houses, foot prints, appearances and behaviors-- Mr. Hickey wore tailored suits, unskilled at manual labor, grandmother politically oriented, sociologist order, Mr. Hickey was not tall, dark complexion, never did housework, Houses-- original houses were inexpensive, three rooms, t-shaped, more traditional, German word for box bacon was shipped in, General family reactions, very supportive, tolerable, their settlement, bend of a river, father liked for its soil, changed its course, took part of his land, rain raised the river, flooding could be a problem, general reactions- got along with most of the community, conflict with some, might have done some chores, not believed to have general disapproval, Mr. Hickey-- difference settled without violence, raised Catholic, not very religious though, human responsibility in leadership, good speaker, definite point to speeches, never raised a hand to his nieces

Tape 1, Side 2: Mr. Hickey (cont)-- throat cancer, items donated after their death, Mrs. Lamb and her sister did not get the papers, government owed something to the people, not just military action
