New page

Sue Kingsbery Porter grew up on a ranch in Coleman County, south of Santa Anna, Texas. Her Dad graduated from Texas Tech in 1949 and her Mom attended Tarleton State Junior College. Both parents were members of the respective college’s rodeo teams. Sue intended to enroll at Texas A&M but on the spur of the moment she decided to enroll at Texas Tech sight unseen because the Aggies traditionally were making it difficult for women to enroll at A&M. At Tech she enrolled in Animal Science and graduated in 1974. In 1970-71 she needed to have a Physical Education class, so she enrolled in an Advanced Basketball class taught by Ruth Morrow who was also the girls basketball coach. Sue played on the girls team for four years that were prior to the official creation of the Lady Raider program in 1975-76 basketball season. Sue followed the Lady Raider program and was delighted when the ladies who played on Tech’s basketball teams prior to 1975-76 were recognized as officially a part of the women’s basketball program by the Texas Tech Athletic Department
