Abstract

Gonzo, Late 70’s, Austin Opera House- audition/drummer (Pearcy), Lived in Austin in the early 70’s, Cosmic Cowboy era, Drummer- speaking (Pearcy), Was in high school, studying music, Thinks that era put Austin on the map, Geronimo’s Cadillac broke the music industry up, Willie Nelson said “ I did not start the movement[in Austin], I just laid down in the middle of it”, The Flying Burrito Brothers- opened the door, Country music with a twist, Charles Quartto, Murphy, Beatles- blended rock sensibility with good songs, Cultural phenomenon, What do you look for, It’s about feeling, Music went from being urban to “earthy”, Whole Foods/Mother Earth, “Do it ourselves”, Bo Jangles, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band- pre 1972, Kelly, Talks about how he got into the mix, He played organ, 1973, He played the honky tonks, Did not think he could compete with the rock bands, What divided country from rock n roll was politics, Went to Luckenbach - came with an open mind about country music, He had a B3 organ, Ended up renting it to the promoters at the gigs, McGary, Texas fever, Café York, Cosmic Cowboy, 1971-, They don’t quite remember, They just follow the music, Gonzo, A letter from Walt Wilkins is read to the band, High school- Rednecks and Hippies (Pearcy), He was on the hippie side, Rednecks would beat the hippies up, Mark Edelstein- roadie, Texas was always more open minded than the other southern states, In Texas the Veterans did not get spit on, Texas was just a different state, The girls were attracted to the music and bands, the redneck guys, Had to get used to the music, because they were left out, Lubbock, Student Union, Huge rally, Prominent preachers etc…, The ballad of the green barets- came in and threw eggs at the preachers, Political heat, Music lasts, External/internal, Conflicts
